I'm not going to lie, I was so nervous about returning to university on Monday 1st June. I was terrified. What if everyone was already so clued up and I look really stupid? What if I don't make any friends? Turns out everyone felt the same.
We sat in silence in the textiles room at 9.30am, the odd murmured conversation about what degrees we had done and what we were good at. After a brief ice breaker to help us get to know each other, we got stuck in. A quick list of what subject knowledge teachers need to teach textiles gave us a list of qualities and knowledge requirements, as well as a debate about how the question was phrased.
The oddest task came next, where we were asked to get into pairs and 'cover a sweet potato in a single layer of paper'. Again many questions were asked and discussed, but the task worked again as a nice little ice breaker as we worked in pairs to cover the lumpy vegetable.
Group work seems to be the basis of the day, as we were then asked to form groups of three to design a waistcoat. From sketching, to measuring, pattern creation, cutting, fit and fabric design, we soon made good friends, and very fetching paper shells of our design.
From here we learnt the art of Shibori tie dye, and dyed bleached calico with indigo dye. The results won't be seen for another week, but I will upload pictures of our final garment.
I had the pleasure of working with the lovely Jo and Polly on this waistcoat project. I hope our design looks great once we have cut our fabric and created our 3D garment!
